Portuguese Beef Skewers

How to make Portuguese Beef Skewers.

Ingredients: Serves 4-6

  • 1 1/2 lbs beef sirloin, cubed into 2″ chunks
  • 3 Roma tomatoes, halved
  • 2 green peppers, halved and seeded
  • 6 garlic cloves, minced
  • 12 bay leaves, crumbled
  • 1/4 cup Madeira wine
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • 2 tsp salt

  1. In a small bowl, mix together the minced garlic, crushed bay leaves and black pepper.
  2. Rub the beef chunks with the mixture and place them in a flat baking dish or ziploc bag.
  3. In another small bowl, mix together the Madeira wine and the olive oil.
  4. Pour the wine mixture over the beef cubes, making sure they are well coated.
  5. Place the beef in the refrigerator to marinate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  6. When you are ready to cook your beef, pre-heat your grill to medium high heat.
  7. Place the beef chunks on soaked, sturdy, wooden skewers or metal skewers, interspersed with the tomato and green pepper halves.
  8. Sprinkle the beef and vegetables with salt.
  9. Grill the meat for 3-5 minutes.
  10. Flip the skewers and grill for an additional 3-5 minutes, until the beef is just starting to become firm.
  11. Remove the skewers from the grill to a platter.
  12. Cover the skewers with aluminum foil and let them stand for 10 minutes before serving.
  13. Serve the skewers on a bed of crusty bread, drizzled with any juices that pooled in the platter as they rested.
