Meatballs in Onion Gravy

How to make Meatballs in Onion Gravy.


For the Meatballs:

  • 450 g Beef Mince
  • 30 g Breadcrumbs
  • 1 Egg, large
  • 2 Tablespoons full-fat milk
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Italian Seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • ½ teaspoon Pepper

For the Onion Gravy:

  • 2 onions medium, peeled and sliced
  • 2 Tablespoons Butter
  • 4 Tablespoons Flour
  • 240 ml Beef Stock
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 240 ml Water
  • Salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper


  1. Combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, worcestershire sauce, seasoning, salt and pepper.
  2. Mix until just combined, do not over-mix.
  3. Roll into 16 meatballs.
  4. Drizzle oil into a large pan with high sides over medium/high heat.
  5. Place meatballs into pan ensuring not to overcrowd.
  6. Brown all sides and transfer to a plate, then set aside.
  7. Add sliced onions to the pan with the remaining meatball grease.
  8. Saute for 5-10 minutes or until onions are tender.
  9. Add butter to pan then begin sprinkling flour one tablespoon at a time, stirring between each addition.
  10. Slowly pour in broth, worcestershire sauce and water while stirring.
  11. Bring to a simmer then reduce the heat to medium/low.
  12. Return meatballs to pan and cook until gravy is thick and meatballs are cooked through, for about 10-15 minutes.
  13. Add more water if needed during this time.
  14. Add salt and pepper to taste.
  15. Serve topped with fresh parsley over mashed potatoes, rice or pasta.
