Bread & Butter Pudding

How to make a Bread and Butter Pudding.

Ingredients: Serves 6

  • Sliced brown bread 175g
  • Butter, softened 25g
  • Sultanas or raisins 40g
  • Egg yolks 3
  • Caster sugar 55g
  • Vanilla extract 1tsp
  • Carnation Evaporated Milk 410g
  • Caster sugar, to finish (optional) 2 tbsp


  1. Lightly butter the bread and cut each slice in half.
  2. Layer the bread and sultanas in a 1 litre oven-proof dish.
  3. Beat together the egg yolks, sugar and vanilla, then stir in the evaporated milk.
  4. Pour over the bread.
  5. Press the bread down lightly and leave to soak for 20 minutes.
  6. Preheat the oven to 180ºC, (160°C for fan ovens) Gas Mark 4.
  7. Put the dish in a roasting tin and then pour boiling water into the roasting tin, until about half way up the side of the dish.
  8. Bake for 30 minutes.
  9. If you want to add a crunch to your Bread and Butter Pudding simply sprinkle the top of the pudding with caster sugar and grill until the sugar caramelises for a crunchy top!
